Complementary to Present Funding

The PI presently is funded to study how energetic particles are trapped in a quadrupole ``cusp'' trap. The same codes he develops can be used to study trapping of dust particles in a magnetic balloon, because the large mass of the dust produces gyroradii comparable to MeV ions in the cusp trap. Dr. Gallagher is presently modelling the 3-D distribution of cold plasma in the Earth's magnetosphere, which involves empirical models that can be applied to the magnetic balloon. But the truly complementary programs are those of Dr. Abbas and Dr. Thomas who are both studying dusty plasmas already with operating experimental setups. This proposal is a natural extension of Dr. Abbas' work to ``custom'' dust, rather than the silica and alumina particles of ``natural'' cometary and interstellar dust that is presently the focus of his research. For Dr. Thomas, who does not receive any NASA funding, this work extends his research into low density and small diameter dust grains, when have not yet been experimentally measured.
